Gutian Town is located in the north-west part of Shanghang County of Fujian Province, bordering on Xinluo District and Liancheng County. The town is an open basin among mountains. On its east is ShuangJi Mt.; on its north is the National Natural Reserve Meihuashan Mt.; and on its south is the Diaozhongyan. Thus the town is characterized with unique landform, which makes it easy to defend. In those years, there was only one rugged road from Longyan to Gutian.
The site of the Congress used to be the ancestral temple of Liao Clan and was built up in 1848. It’s also called Wanyuan Temple. After the Reform Movement of 1898, it was changed into the first primary school in Gutian and was named Hesheng Primary School. In 1929, when the Fourth Army of the Red Army advanced into Minxi, they changed its name into Shuguang (or Dawn) Primary School.
The inscribed couplet on the door implies the meaning of Study, Opening-up, and Revival.
The site is a bungalow Siheyuan (Chinese quadrangle) of wood-brick structure. Inside, there is a wide courtyard. The building consists of two halls (upper and lower) and two wing houses (right and left). It’s elaborately decorated with vivid engravings and paintings of dragon, phoenix and stories like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and etc.
Changting Museum ChangTing Museum, which is site of the earliest Soviet government in Fujian. The museum is located at the center of the city, consisting of Changting Revolutionary History Exhibition Hall and Changting Hakka Museum. The museum used to be the guard site of Tingzhou in Song Dynasty and the Tingzhou Examination Institute in Ming Dynasty.
In the middle is the central hall, on both sides are nowadays Hakka Museum and Revolutionary History Exhibition Hall. Beside the central hall, there is a simple house, which used to be the prison cell for Qu Qiubai. The museum is the site of the Fujian First Congress of Workers, Peasants and Soldiers which was held on 18th March 1932, and when Fujian Soviet Government was established. Now, the museum is a national key protected cultural relic.
National Historic and Cultural City—Changting Changting is a beautiful mountain city, which is famous for its picturesque scenery, simple and unsophisticated custom, long history and human culture. The county can trace its history back to over 1260 years ago. The Tingjiang River is one of three biggest rivers in Fujian and the biggest river in Minxi. The river flows 285 kilometers through four Hakka counties in Xinxi, joining with Meijiang River in Meizhou of Guangdong to mingle into the Hanjiang River, and eventually into the ocean via Shantou.
The drainage area of the river within Minxi is up to over 9000 square kilometers, almost half of the total area of Minxi. The four Hakka counties have a population of over 1.8 million. The river has been, over thousands of years, nourishing the field around the Hakka areas in Fujian and Guangdong, and breeding generations of Hakka offspring.
Therefore, it’s also regarded as the Mother River of Hakka. Every autumn, Hakka from the world will hold a public memorial ceremony for the mother river here. Changting, thus, as an ancestral home for Hakka people, is regarded as the Capital of Hakka. Here, you will witness typical Hakka folk custom and culture, as well as delicious Hakka food and local products. They can make over 100 courses of food just out of bean curd. Besides, Changting is also famous for its dried bean curd, Hetian Chicken, braised pork, lamp-shape cake, and bean curd dumpling. |
